95 Volvo 850 with Turbo Shows 322 transmission code

I've had this happen twice to me in the last 6 weeks. The car began showing a flashing UP icon on the instrument panel as if I were in a lower gear, but it was flashing. Prior to this, I had a check engine indication which I had not read. So, I had a check engine light, a flashing UP icon, and the car was definitely not in first gear on takeoff.

The code I got for the transmission was 322 which indicates "incorrect gear ratio". I had to agree but what was making it incorrect? I had not touched the WINTER switch on the console and the problem began in the middle of an errand. I stopped for a stop sign and the car didn't want to take off and the UP icon was flashing.l There were no A2 codes. I checked the ABS codes and found several that I am ignoring for now. The Transmission (A!) codes reset and when I turned the switch back on, the flashing UP icon had stopped.

Any ideas as to where to look? I suspect the car is back to normal now.

Chances are your PNP switch is failing. A quick and dirty check is to see if your reverse lights work.

You can often temporarily get it working again by quickly running the shifter from low to park about 20 times.

Agreed.
Many times the "rowing" back and forth (engine ON, Brakes ON) will clean the contacts, but be prepared to replace the switch ASAP and do NOT continue to drive while the arrow is on, you can damage the transmission

The problem was the gear position sensor (also known as the neutral switch) mounted on the transmission. I decided to try to repair it since it was clear that the unit could be taken apart. I fixed it right on the transmission although I had to physically remove it from the transmission (the electrical leads were a mystery as to how to remove it). Anyway, I refurbished the three copper contacts inside and cleaned up the three copper tracks inside and I'm good to go. Sent pics to Matt to post if he finds them useful.
