Compatible alternators for 2000 V70R

Post by scot850 »

I am having a challenge trying to figure out what alternators fit my car and the compatible Volvo models that may use the same unit. At the junkyard I don't want to waste time looking or pulling alternators that may not be the right one. Some may recall this thread on one I pulled recently that is dead (still trying to decide if to return or keep as a cheap core).

Even Volvo sites are confusing. The part number on my alternator is a Bosch re-build unit # AL0805X.

Some parts suppliers say that this does not fit my car, but clearly it does. They say it fits later models only. Other sites link the original part number Volvo # 9459077 to only P80's from 98-00 and -04 (C70). This part number is listed as NLA at Volvo, but some sites give a part change to 36050282 which fits S80's and P2's and even V/S40 (first gen) as well as P80's. It also links to another Bosch part # AL0755X.

Can anyone clarify what part numbers do fit so I can figure out if cars come into the junkyard it is worth a trip to go and pull a spare.

Thanks,

Neil.

The reason there are multiple listings comes down to the heated seats I believe as well as other potential models such as the police versions.

The older cars had 100A alternators (up to around 98) then went to the 120A alternators. I think some later models after 00 had 140A alternators. Problem I am having is identifying alternate part numbers and what part numbers are actually correct to a vehicle. Examples are according to some part suppliers the alternator which is on my car is not correct for the car although it was supplied direct from Bosch (OE supplier) and had been on the car for 10 years??

Please don’t price anchor on the “ rebuilt Bosch “ at $260 as being equivalent to OE

In todays world, they aren’t.

I wonder if some of the part numbers are only different in the pulley. At some point Volvo switched to the overrun pulley system... I forget what those are called. My 96 is a normal pulley, but I think my 99 has the new fangled fancy pulley.

It is a clutch.

Abscate, I hear you. But even with a 2 year warranty it is better than a no-name brand with no track record?

The original part number for my Volvo alternator I took back to the junkyard is showing as NLA from the dealer. I believe they may have upchanged the part number but to what?

What I am trying to do is identify what alternators are compatible with my car by part number, but it may be there are some which like 454cid says may have the same base alternator, but it is the pulley that is different. So for example, does a 2001 V70 alternator fit my 00 P80 V70R? On some websites they say yes it does. On others they say no.
