As these are just measuring the ambient temperature of the coolant when the engine is cool, I am assuming that the resistance values remain the same for when out of the car? I pulled one from the junkyard and on the bench it was showing 4,000 Ohms at +14C which seems way of based on the chart. So basically a bit of poo am I correct? Or do I need to drop it into water to check the sensor correctly?

Do the Volvo sensors have any markings on them? This one I can find no part number or logos on it so possibly aftermarket? Looking at pictures on Volvo dealer part sites, they don't seem to have any obvious markings either.

Ok, I've finally replaced the temperature sensor. The problem so far didn't come back. The fan doesn't start when it shouldn't and doesn't stay on when the car is off at least so far.

It looks like it's a fix at least as of now.

BTW, a rubber ring around the old thermostat has fell apart and turned into black powder as soon as I touched it. I really feel lucky I've ordered new thermostat and not just a temperature sensor.

I had same problem about a year ago, fan kept running.
Was the temperature sensor.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.
