I've always had issues with "bulb position failure" message. Up until know replacing bulb has fixed it.
But this time the fuse is blown. When I replace the fuse and turn car in, fuse blows immediately for the passenger side (position 31 in fuse panel)
I disconnected the wiring harnesses from the taillight fixture but fuse still blows. So I don't think it's the bulbs or the fixture itself.
Ideas on what I can try next? I've read that sometimes an older battery can cause fuses to blow (and other strange behaviors) on Volvos? Battery is probably 8yrs old.
Thanks!
Fuse 31 (bulb position light) blows as soon as key is turned to on position

I have the exact same issue you described. Did you ever determine the fix? Thanks!

Have you checked the wiring harness to the trunk lid? I don't know the S80, but the S70 liked to fracture the wires to the trunk lid in the trunk near the hinges and short stuff out. V70's also do this with the tailgate wiring.

So you’ve got a short to ground in one of the right side marker lights, tail light or marker light up front. It would also be a ground not touching the body back there. I’d take the whole tail light bucket out, look for any frayed / broken wires and follow the ground wire to the the body. The left tail light powers the trunk lid, so if you remove all of those bulbs and it’s still blowing the fuse, it’s in the harness, almost certainly at the rink / body join rubber grommet.
I’d there is a short to ground at the socket of a particular bulb, I can’t imagine that bulb continuing to function.
Which lights are out when the fuse blows?
