98 V70 X/C AWD brake hose scary close to wheel

Post by travelingtoad »

I have a volvo v70 x/c AWD. I replaced a brake line in the vehicle when I noticed the brake hose was rubbed. I also replaced the brake pads, as they were worn down significantly. I replaced the brake hose and was checking clearance and the brake hose is incredibly close to the wheel. Approximately 1/8" of a gap. Maybe 3/16". This seems very wrong. The hoses were ordered from Autozone, but they appear to match correctly (maybe the metal collar is a smidge longer?) and the calipers are correct for the vehicle (Girling 1066-3.) I should note that this is not a problem with twisting of the hose. The rubbing isn't far from the metal collar and the hose can only strain so much away.

If the wheel have a larger than standard offset this is possible. Standard P80 V70 XC offset is 43mm. Wheels from a S60/P2 model is typically 49mm offset which moves the rim inward towards the inner fender. I seem to recall this being fairly close, but I think I was able to bend the mounting for the pipe at the metal pipe end to move it further away. The V70 XC also came with 15" wheels so if you have up-sized to 16" or 17" that will also move the rim closer. Mind you the tire on the different diameters should not make much of a difference although a taller sidewall also causes the tire to move toward the brake hose.

The vehicle has 15" wheels. I brought a wheel inside and measured the offset. It measured 43mm.

Something I found interesting is you said that you bent the metal pipe. Is your rear brake hose in the style of this because the vehicle did not have a hose like such when I got it, although that would certainly give me the clearance. Auto part stores are also saying this hose is compatible (which matched the hose the vehicle came with.) After running into the first link, it made me inspect my caliper. The seat is very much concave as if it would take the bubble flare.... Has the vehicle had the wrong brake hose on it??

Mine is like the 2nd one at FCP. ATE is the OE supplier for Volvos brakes of this era. I generally use Volvo parts as I do most of the labor so pay up for the parts instead to try to make sure the parts fit.

I also had a rubbing issue on the large rubber 'buffer on the one end. This turned out to be because of a slow puncture in one rear tire.
