94 - 850 Wagon - Transmission Issue

Hey everyone,

So I thought I had my Volvo Check engine problems solved, but the light popped on again, check the codes and took it in to my mechanic. Its the EGR Valve and he says he can clean it rather than replace it, which is much less costly.

So I drove it back to my house because he couldn't work on it late in a Friday, and 3 miles in, driving up a hill, my transmission just drops. It wont go into gear at all.

I barely made it up this hill, pop the hood and there is fluid everywhere. I immediately think it is the transmission all together, but I notice that a hose towards the front grill of the car has completely become disengaged. I re-attached the hose and put in a quart of fluid (but it lost much more than a quart) and it started to go back into gear slightly, but not for long.

I guess I was wanting some assurance and any advice, or if this has happened to anyone else. I want to be knowledgable about the issue while talking to my mechanic.

I'll try and get a picture of the hose, but I'm hoping he can repair the faulty connection from the hose to the transmission, rather than it being my transmission altogether. Gonna bust my wallet if that's the case.

Brent,
Do not drive your car. I hope you haven't already damaged your transmission. I'm hoping this is not more than the hose at this point. Did the connection break or did the hose pop a leak? Filling with the correct amount will be essential, but to be honest, I would either go and get the mechanic to come out and see the car where it is or have it towed in.

yeah i had it towed immediately cos i didn't have enough fluid to correctly fill it.

but at the connection, it had basically come off altogether. I didn't see any other leaks. i wish i had a picture, because it is hard to describe, but where the hose meets the box at the front of the car there is a connection. the hose basically came lose and popped off, sending fluid everywhere from what i could tell.

hope that helps. but im not driving at all. didn't want to damage it.

If the little metal "clamp" over the hose end popped off and it's gone, it's easy to replace. I believe the dealer has them for a couple of bucks. Once off they don't fit right so I put a plastic zip-tie around mine and cinch it up.
