Windshield Wipers for Volvo 1998 v70, Dual Blades?

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

Yesterday i went out to the store and found that my brand new wiper blades were swapped out for ripped ones at one of the garages. Just like my passenger side light that was swapped out from orange to clear, the wiper blades i paid 25 bucks for were changed to an old set that were already ripped. Lucky they were not entirely ripped across so i was able to drive in the light rain here yesterday. At first i thought they were dirty but when i went to clean them i saw the rip about 5 inches long. That's what kind of criminals we have in Central NJ.

Anyway, i was wondering a few things about the wipers for these cars.
First, are they both 21 inches on the front windshield?
Also, do they make dual blade wipers for these cars? Are dual wiper blades actually that much better than single blade wipers?
If they are that much better, are any available for under $50 USD?

Thanks.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Bosch 21a are the fit. OE Volvo are no longer available, died during Covid

I don’t get why double blades are a thing , they sure won’t help in winter.

$12 at FCp and I FReeCP them every two years or so

Hi,

Oh great thanks Steve.
Yes I wasn't sure if dual blades actually do much more. I want triple blades :-)
Maybe that's where shaving blade co.'s got their ideas from.

I haven't seen a double blade wiper since the 90's. It was a racey gimmick that us kids (at the time) put on our cars. I had black ones that I bought at Big Lots. This was back during the neon craze.

Hi,

Oh so you think they don't do much more than single blades?

I made a typo in my previous post I meant to say:
"Maybe that's where shaving blade co.'s got their ideas from."

Yes i haven't seen them for a long time now either.
I guess in the case i have now if one blade ripped maybe the other blade would make up for it until you got around to replacing them.

The double blades are a waste of money and don’t work worth a damn. Just buy quality single blades.

If we're thinking of the same thing, they were strictly for looks. I mean they wiped water, but it was extra material for the sake of "style". The wind would even catch them a bit, if I recall. I ended up with extra springs on my wiper arms.

For good, but cheap blades, I'd recommend buying Denso blades through Rockauto. Actually Rockauto has all their wiper blades much cheaper than any local store.

Hi,

Oh ok thanks. Got a pair now but looking to get a second set to keep in the car. It rained harder on the way home but lucky it wasnt too hard. I might have had to wait in the parking lot for the rain to slow down. When i went out barely a drizzle.

Just to throw in my 2cents. Dual blade wipers were generally marketed as "extreme weather" wiper blades, especially during the strom chaser craze of the 2000's.

Silicone wiper blades are apparently much better for such extreme conditions, as well as winter driving. Allegedly they also last much longer. And they better for over $80 a set.

Wally world, farm supply stores, and the internet will always have waaaay better prices for new wiper blades. What they charge at auto parts stores and gas stations is highway robbery. +1 for buying from FreeCP. I use to buy the made in Europe Bosch wiper blades. They were much higher quality and longevity then the Bosch china ones they sell everywhere else. Unfortunately, I think Bosch has since outsourced all wiper blade manufacturing to Asia / Indonesia.

MrAI I highly recommend Bosch clear advantage beam blades. Even during heavy downpour, they did pretty good. Not amazing for that much water, but like 85/100. I buy bigger than oem for my 98 v70. Rear window is 14 or 16 oem I think. I've got bosch 16CA. Got 22CA passenger side, 24CA driver side.
