Hi, can anyone tell me the correct procedure to flush the head through on a 440 1.8 of the 1994 vintage?.
Im ok with flushing the radiator but I intend to change the coolant and would like the whole system to be clean as it appears to have been neglected by its previous owner.
Thanks in advance
Matt

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
Before draining the system ensure that the heater control is set on 'Hot'. Drain the system. Remove the two hoses from the engine to the radiator and, for full flushing, remove the thermostat. Replace the themostat housing temporarily. No need for a new gasket at this stage. Using a hosepipe flush the engine/heater through the top pipe on the head. Don't use too much water pressure. This actually back flushes the system which is the best way to flush radiator or engine.
When the water runs clear replace the thermostat, using a new gasket, reconnect the hoses and slowly refill the system with water/antifreeze mix. The heater control must still be on 'Hot' whilst refilling to prevent air locks. Whilst filling gently massage the two big hoses to help expel air.
Bill.
