Muffler replacement, 2002 V70-XC

Post by MikeChick »

Dealer just called to tell me I need a new muffler. I dropped car at dealer this morning for lower control arm bushing install. I haven't picked the car back up yet to see exactly what they're saying is bad but they quoted me $900. How can that be? What are my options? Can I go aftermarket? That's a lot of money.

Don't let them do it. Your car is only 6 years old- doubtful that it really needs a new muffler. Go and check it out first...plus there are many many other options that are much much cheaper. I hate the dealer when they do the "bait and switch." 9 times out of 10 nothing is needed in my experience. They have your car for something that isn't so bad and suddenly there are "pressing issues" which are expensive to you, that they say you need to have done. Of course, you aren't there to actually see. They are, most often, hoping that "blindly" you'll take them up on their offer to "rape you."

Thanks MIJ, I told them not to move forward on replacing the muffler. Assuming I discover some part of the muffler is in need of replacement, where do I go about getting parts? I didn't see anything on FCP Groton or eeuroparts.com.

Just go to a muffler shop and make up what's needed for 1/4 the price
