rubbing probably isn’t the right term, neil. more like something spinning. it was engine-rpm related. happened when i depressed the pedal to push the acceleration while driving the car forward.
i reved it is park, drive, and neutral without moving to the same effect. as i got to just over 3,000 it started to surge with the car bucking slightly along with the surge.
i say WAS engine related, because a new set of symptoms soon emerged. it went from idling smoothly to surging at idle, unevenly. died a coupla times. restarted, and it idled roughly with a
the surge.
started smelling something. went from something burnt to, swear to god, rotten eggs. i looked at the tail pipe, and a small puff of black smoke came out at the end of each surge.
after a while, it calmed down and idled smoothly.
finally, no check engine light, but it throws the ecm 6806 turbo control system code.
can’t fathom why the battery change coincided with a whole different set of symptoms.

An induction leak will cause all that. It’s hard work but check all the pipes from the air cleaner all the way to the throttle body. There are a lot of clamps that can get loose.
12 clamps here, two more smaller hoses on the snorkel , and your XC will have two more on the vacuum ejector on the hard pipe driver side just behind radiator.

steve, you were correct. the hose clamp on my fancy reverse intercooler system had come off the intake to the turbo. reattaching the hose solved the running issues.
so, the ets light and limp mode were caused by a dying battery, and the surging and crappy running were an induction problem.
turns out this wasn’t my first post here. i had forgotten about posting in 2018, when guess who helped me out….steve!
