2001 V70 XC - Rear Brakes Lights Do Not Come On Topic is solved

You troubleshoot electrical stuff working backwards, using a VOM.

I have become a wiser man this morning.

I pulled the bulb out and connected two alligator clips the the hot and ground terminal at the socket connection.
I ran two wires from the clips up to the front seat. I connected them to the VOM and pressed the brake getting 11.65 volts.
I then connected the two wires right to the bulb holder and, presto, light.

Looks like I need new sockets/bulb holders.

After narrowing it down to the connection with the bulb-holder and socket, I priced new lighting & bulb assemblies and decided to find a way to make these work. In short, I added two jumper wires off the bulb-holder and soldered them to the metal plate that carries the hot and ground signal at the socket.

This is what mine looked like. Totally fine visually!

If you remove the bulb-holder, you can see two small slits in the metal lugs on the side. I fed a wire through one of the slits and up into the holder.

I then wrapped the wire around the lug that would be touching against the socket when installed. I soldered the wires to that lug.

I did the same thing to the other lug leaving me with a bulb-holder that looks like this.

After scratching the metal plate with a screwdriver, I soldered the wire connected to the lug on the right (when installed) to the metal down below it.

I soldered the wire from the lug on the left side of the bulb-holder to the metal plate on the left, above where the tail light assembly gets plugged in.

Here's what it looks like when installed, looking through the speaker hole. I but some silicone over the solder joints to protect and secure them a bit. I left enough slack in the wire to be able to pull the bulb holder out and change a bulb.

Now all my brake lights work and I'm very happy. Great forum here! Glad to be a new member!

Would someone be so kind as to post the iPD or such part number for ordering new rear brake light relay? There are so many listed on the iPD website... I cannot figure out which one is the right on. Many thanks!!!

The Recall Campaign No. 131 - Brake Light Relay was intended to replace combo with two singles.

The brake light and fog light are on their own relays. I believe, M15 and M16 respectively.

There are no lower brake lights.
If you have a brake light functioning on both sides, your done.
The tail lamps are divided into upper and lower. The lowers have double filament bulbs, but they are for fog lamp function.
