A contemporary of fellow Canadians Joni Mitchell and Ian and Sylvia Tyson, his songs were covered by a generation of big names in music.

His music leaned folk and country early on, then he became quite the balladeer.

He wrote about a Great Lakes shipwreck shortly after she was lost with all hands.
