You still have the same lack of availability on the rear bushes and the fuel pump, the saddle fuel tank and all that extra complexity of the evap system. The R is just an AWD so you can pull the prop-shaft if you need to.

^This. When I bought mine, it was already missing the prop shaft and angle gear. Then I manual swapped it with an M56, and at that point it just made sense to keep it going. Plus I had a parts car at my disposal by the time I finally decided to pull the trigger on this project, so I figured I'd go for it.

Today the plan was simple, remove the steering wheel (easy done this before many times). Except the freeking thing refused to allow the airbag to come off. Both studs were clicking showing they were out the threaded retainers but it would not come off. After 15 m ins of faffing around it suddenly came loose? Steering wheel bolt. Easy. Nope! Would not budge. Out with the big impact and it come off.

All that is left is to disconnect the multiplug under the LHS of the dash, remove the 2 T25 Torx screws (one each side on the A pillar) and then the 4 main bolts. 30 mins tops.

3 1/2 hours later still trying to get the dam thing off. Discovered the idiots that installed the alarm system and keyless entry system had wired what looked like 2 hard wires to the disconnect side of the harness which is part of the removable lower dash. Not only that they had move the main harness so that the disconnect was jammed behind the safety bar and the door module. 20 minute fight to remove the 2 harnesses to the door module (you can't see the clip as it is on the rear) and one was held in by the disconnect harness forcing it to stay in place.

That is when I got the harness through I discovered the hard wired cable. Tried to see where it went in the hope I could remove it from the other end wherever it went. Naturally the alarm box hid everything and they had used what looked like 10 cable ties and 3 rolls of black tape which took an age to remove. to figure out the other end of the one wire (not 2 that it looked like) was hard wired into a connector.

Back to the other end to see that it was only one wired that had been spliced into the original harness and soldered on. Darned Blankety blank I said. Out with the wire snips and one cut wire later all was good to go. Except it wasn't. Another random wire to somewhere was looped through the light switch harness and then another hidden harness in the middle. Finally with my son's help we finally got the lower console out. Normally I can get one out in about 3-4 hours. This has taken closer to 8!!

What is the damage? RH mount on the LHS 2 mounts is broken clean off. RH has a small hairline crack. Passenger side, both are cracked but repairable. Then there is the broken surround around the speedo cluster which looks like it is replaceable with the spare, and then some plastic welding on the surround on the upper RH corner of the glove box hole. Will probably cut a part out of the other dash and weld and glue it in and reinforce it.

This will now have to wait as it is back to look at the 850 base tomorrow, remove the serp belt and check the timing belt for issues and then pull the plugs and try mu new borescope with 90 degree attachment to check the pistons, cylinders and valves for damage.

Owner doew not want to spend a lot on repairing the car. So if none of these show an issue it is rod/bearing/cam issue and beyond the repair costs they are willing to spend. Sad, but lets hope!! :D

I have also planned to go check out the engine swap east of Calgary where a father/son team plan to swap a 04 C70 auto turbo engine into a 00 S70 NA manual. Helping them by explaining what is needed to my knowledge which is a big list! It will probably require a fair amount of security system changes and also software mods to take from auto to manual. Ignition system will also need swapped I believe due to chipped keys as well as the speedo unit and ECU. Not going to be easy!

Might be easier to fix the bad valve on the NA motor!!

It's doable, but not the easiest thing. Basically, the "easiest" way to do it would be swap over the ECM, cluster, and ignition/key from the turbo to the NA car. Then, you'll also need to swap over the engine harness, and most likely the other side of the ECM harness. Then a manual tune. At that point, you should be in good shape.

Spent this past Saturday at the LKQ yard in Greensboro NC to harvest an M56 swap. The car hit the yard 2-3 days before I got to it but was completely intact when I got there :). Feel bad for the donor car, it is a 1998 S70 T5M https://www.lkqpickyourpart.com/invento ... volvo-s70/ (VIN YV1LS5344W2424579) so from what I can gather somewhat rare. From what I could tell it had catastrophic engine failure, driver's side axle was gone (seems to be broken) and when removing the flywheel bolts with a breaker bar the rotating bits didn't rotate. Anyway, got the whole shebang, trans, flywheel, clutch master cylinder, pedals (don't think I can use these), shifter assembly and cables. Had to reposition to car on the sets as it was sitting on the read subframe mounts. Now to start parts gathering for a nice fall project.

Nice find! You may be able to transfer the pedals to the 850 bracket, but I'm not totally sure. You will likely need the correct 850 pedal assembly.

Yeah, will most likely just pick up a set. Does anyone know of a write up or other education on how to inspect the M56 internals, little concerned no if the axle was broken and engine seized. Would like to see if all is OK in the inside, shifted fine before removal.

I'm not sure, but fortunately these transmissions are pretty solid, so you likely don't have anything to worry about. I've only heard of a handful of failures.
I would try to find any LSD installation writeups, as that involves tearing down the transmission.
