B5234T? N Blocks!

Post by GranTouringRacing »

So as a Volvo tuner i have been building a load of forged engines recently and one thing that puzzles me that i cannot get a definitive answer on it with the timing belts.

So i’m talking about the Motronic Blocks here 94-98 with the 850’s B5234T and then the B5234T3/4/6 used in the C/V/S70 p80 cars.

The 850’s B5234T blocks use a belt with the Aisin spring loaded tensioner and the later B5234T3/4/6’s use the more common mechanical manual adjuster ones.

Yes the belts are different lengths, but thats because of the tensioners being very different and the blocks are identical with the same bolt holes on them both so the question is can you use the later (easier to change) kit on early engines to make them essentially B5234T3/4/5’s as they are all getting forged internals anyway.

I personally can’t see any difference but i’m being told it’s not possible but i think it is?

Obviously i know the normal response is keep it the same and do what the Volvo part numbers say, but there is more available for the later engines!

Thanks in advance!

On a different forum I believe user dougy could install the new tensioner on the old blocks by grinding a bit of material of the block. He did this as he was building a R version engine with a 2.3T block. However which tensioner exactly, I can't say. Take my info with a grain of salt of course since I could be misleading you.

If you look at the positions of the 2 tensioners, the earlier tensioner pulley sits higher on the side of the block. So if there is no hole for the manual tensioner already in the block I can't see how they are exchangeable? Certainly the belts look like different lengths.

It's gone. I registered last fall and never went back until about a month ago and found it doesn't load.
