The P2 Electronic Throttle Module will hum for a few seconds after initial key turn. Not sure if you have this on yours.

It's a 98 so no ETM hum. It is usually just a few seconds before start up for the throttle plate to adapt for start.

Just checked back on the posts on this. Another one has disappeared. I suggested removing the serpentine belt and seeing if it is a bearing on the alternator/ PS pump/AC compressor or tensioner. Also using a stethoscope or long screwdriver with the serp belt of (for safety) check the area of the timing belt on start up for noise.

Something else that makes a noise like that is the engine oil cooler thermostat when they get older. Looking at your engine it looks like a non-turbo so they don't usually have those fitted. As some markets can vary, are there any pipes going into the RH (from drivers seat) back of the radiator, on the opposite side from the auto-trans oil cooler lines?

I could check by pulling off the belt, I won't be able to get to that for a few weeks though. The strange part is the fact that those noises never happen after starting. This whole situation is weird, 2 mechanics checked it and said nothings wrong but the noises happen and I feel like I'm going crazy. But I like the idea alot I will do that sooner than later. If I can't figure out the noise soon I'm just going to get the timing belt replaced and have the real volvo mechanics figure it out. But I'm not giving up hope
