How difficult to remove engine and trans?

Post by FireFox31 »

How difficult is it to remove the engine and automatic transmission on a 2000 V70 NA FWD automatic? I have access to a lift but would probably have to move the car off it without the engine if the work takes more than 2-3 days.

Do you think that removing the engine/trans on the neglected Geronimo would make the following work much easier:
  • Clean off the oil that's caked on engine/trans and engine bay
  • Change the timing belt and water pump
  • Replace all the engine mounts
  • Replace the PCV
  • Replace the rear coolant pipe
  • Maybe reseal the valve cover
  • Maybe remove the head to check/repair worn internals
I'm guessing the hardest part will be disconnecting the exhaust from the manifold. I plan to drain the transmission as part of a flush. I expect to leave the transmission connected to the engine. I just changed the oil and have no intention of opening the engine below the valve cover.

Doing the above work with the engine in, especially cleaning, seems possible but daunting. The cumulative time saved from having the engine out might be less than it takes to remove/replace the engine. Determining that is the question. Thanks.

About 10-12 hours for an engine pull and reinstall. Add 50% for first time

If you are interested we can pull it with my engine crane at one of my locations , most tools at Stony Brook

On edit. I see 10 hours of work for your list, so engine removal isn’t going to save time
