I think it was circular when Bjorn, with a small lip on it. That square thing on left was probably solid with a gap for something.
Im lost after that.

I had to mangle it to remove it, obscuring it's original shape. It's about as big as a quarter and was circular. No rust because I believe it's aluminum. It's easy to guess what it is, but exactly where was it installed?

The clues of "round, aluminum" make me think it could it have been an aluminum drain plug gasket installed on the engine oil or the transmission fluid sumps. Getting any warmer?

Clip holding on transmission oil lines?
I like the drain gasket answer but having trouble seeing how that could get mangled like that.

You're right, it's the engine oil drain plug gasket. 50 more MVS points to jreed. You're quite good at this.
The drain plug was installed to such a high torque that the gasket was almost conical. It's likely that no previous technician changed the gasket so it leaked, thus they overly tightened it to stop the leak. You can still see the conical impression in the upper part of the "after removal" picture, but hopefully see it clearly in the "before removal" picture below.
The gasket diameter was also deformed so much that it would not fit over the plug threads. To remove it, I had to fight to get a tiny grip, then stretch it to get a better grip, repeat until I could fatigue the metal enough to break it.
