Thinking of Selling, 1998 v70

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

I was thinking of selling my 1998 v70. A neighbor said he knows a guy that fixes Volvos and would probably want to buy mine.

See i think if you own these kinds of cars you have to do most of the work on them yourself or else the cost of repairs is way too high.

So what do you think this kind of car would be worth, the asking price, for a private sale?

Thanks.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

It's all condition and local market.

You should gather a list of all the work that you've done on it (which seems like quite a lot) and any remaining unresolved problems. I see the cars being worth the parts that were recently put in to them minus the expected cost to finish bringing them back to health. Also listing the condition of the interior and exterior can help buyers determine how it compares to the average (which is pretty bad interior, solid exterior with typical wear).

I think baseline for a running, streetable car in 2023 is about $1500

Hi Steve,

That sounds about right i guess.
Did i mention it still has a whole year left before it needs inspection.

Price can vary a lot depending on the local market. A running and driving car with 200k miles worth of wear can go for as little as $1500 in the mid west but sell in days for $5000 on the east coast. Cars that pass inspection I think are automatically worth at least $2-3k. Since it's summer, working A/C can bring up the price.

I've bought 2 98s with the M56 transmissions. Both were running and driving, both needed a little work to get perfect, one is objectively in way better shape. I spent $1500 each. I bought a 99 AWD S70 that failed inspection, didn't need anything, for $600 and it came with 2 full sets of new tires and rims.

You have to have a good independent nearby who knows P80 Volvos if you dont do your own work, The dealers are getting less interested in servicing these, and a non-Volvo independent makes bread and butter on brakes, quick strut junk, and oil changes.

Hello Steve,

Sounds like good advice i think i will try that idea and i think we might have one nearby.

I got very discouraged with my last mechanic fix. The owner and his assistant swore up and down that they could get it through inspection once fixed, and needless to say, they defaulted on that. Then i get cards and letters in the mail with a 25 dollar discount coupon. Wow, after spending almost 3000 dollars there i get a 25 dollar coupon.

I guess the problem there is that some of the garages say they work on Volvos, but they dont really know enough to do the job.
Another place up the street fixed my car once, then denied service saying that they don't work on European cars anymore.
There is yet another place but they want 150 dollars for evaluation of the problem(s).

So i got a bunch of bull from many places around here, but i'll try a better place next i guess.
I really don't want to get rid of the car, but my income isn't such that i can keep spending thousands of dollars on repairs, and one of the other issues is that Volvo parts seem to be quite expensive sometimes.

I'm going to play with the speedometer issue again maybe today or tomorrow and see if i can get it working again. If it wasn't for Neil i would have missed that fix and be forced to go to a garage or ditch the car.

Thanks for the reply and ideas.

Years ago I took my Volvo to Rissi's Auto (I think it was called) in Jersey. They specialized exclusively in Euros. They did a bunch of suspension work and did a good job. Kept to their quote. Labor rate was pretty cheap too.

P80 parts really aren't that expensive (at least not anymore). I've been working on a Ford and a Subaru, and after spending $80 for a store brand ball joint and an eye watering $350 for rear pads and rotors (not good ones), I can't wait to buy more Volvo parts.
