Up the game to some Tektron sockets for that M6 , Pittsburghs and Kobalts are ok, but they will break on a tough application

Tektron, Matco, or snap on if you are loaded

You can get a straight shot on them with the right length extension. Use a six point to get a good fit
Here are the tools for water pipe m6 bolt removal. On the RN engine

Top, just a 10mm deep socket
Bottom, SMSLL extension plus socket.

See scale for lengths.

Knocked down in 3.5 hours. Got stuck on one bad buy down pipe, so pulled the manifold off instead. THats gets head to shop, I’ll deal with down pipe later

Eek!

Today started putting the car back together (friends 850 with knocking engine = failed water pump bearing). Car was running but now added coolant and started the burping process.

Following the removal of the spark plug socket rubber jammed over #4 spark plug, the plugs were all cleaned as well as the wells and re-installed and torqued (not finger tight as they had been).

Decided to check the MAF which is a different item to the P80 ones I am used to. It is just a slide in item. I was going to remove it and clean it, but found the connecter was badly furred up with corrosion. Gave the connector a good clean. Then noticed the IAC connector was not sitting right as someone had managed to bend the spring lock on it on one side. 15 mins faffing around to straighten and then clean and refit.

Topped the coolant up again and started the engine. Now runs well, revs well and no more stumbling when revs are dropped to idle!! Yay!!

Need to d some research on the trunk lid lock. It is seized. I believe it is probably the 2 x detente ball bearings have seized up with muck. Now just need to look up how to remove it and see if I can open it up for cleaning. If the 2 balls get full of muck, then they can't compress to allow the barrel to rotate.



This explains the issue but not how to actually remove it from the car.

Now cleaning and refitting various engine covers. Then onto fixing various loose bits of trim, re-rivet one of the limit stop pads on a control arm and finish the parts list for the owner who is dropping off the summer rims to fit. Oh, still also have to pull the rear hub to check what is needed for the parking brake. Hope the car will be ready to go back on Wednesday and then we can discuss further how far the remaining running repairs need to go.

Looks like that valve is missing a chunk. Is that what we all mean by a "burnt valve"? Does it cause loss of compression?

I want to tear apart a white block engine to learn how it all works. I'd like to eliminate engine oil burning and leaking on my cars, so it seems like engine disassembly and rehab will be required.

Yes, no compression when the valves aren't closing - double so when it's partially missing. It isn't a Volvo if you aren't at least leaking from the oil fill plug gasket. =)

Went out and attempted to convince myself I should work on either or both Volvos today. Did not succeed. Went back into house. Bad me, very bad... 10 lashes for that! I worked the whole weekend so I guess I get to give myself a pass...
