I've blown it up as large as I can get it. It looks like 12 sectors loke a clock. If it is orientated as per the part number stamp then it is a 9.

Assuming the sectors are as per a clock face, there is a dot in the 5 and 6 sector as well as the 9 and 10. What that is telling us I have no idea.

My friend says it didn't come from them but says she's seen one or two at the parts counter with people trying to match them up. She suspects it may be a chinese ebay pump...

But why the heck would a shop do that? I'm guessing there may be someone supplying counterfeit pumps to distributors if I had to guess. That would make them more prevalent.

I have no idea how old the pump is. There are various stickers on the engine cover and ECU lid noting date and mileage of TB change but not if water pump was changed. In the pumps' defense, the car stood a lot during covid for long periods un-used as the owner worked from home. That is not good for a pump either. The failure was most notable after the last 2-3 month stand.

Anyway, the pump appears to have been the issue. Engine is currently running nicely for 290,000 miles.

Should be on its third or fourth pump by now. If it’s a 9, it’s a 2009 or 2019 vintage.

My T5 OE pump went 230k in perfect condition, I should have replaced it on schedule at 210k, bit late

I would like to ask if the noise sounded like marbles rattling in the head. Recently my 1999 s70-glt (93K miles) made a frightening noise at idle like marbles in the head and then disappeared. I think it is the lifters. Engine runs fine. Good power. No other unusual noises. Thanks for a reply

The water pump was a steady knocking noise and sounded like it was coming from the timing belt end of the engine, but did sound like it was from the head. AS we no know it was an almost completely failed water pump bearing impeller causing the noise due to the TB load pulling it to one side grinding a grove in the inner pump body.

Once the engine was running it was ticking quite loudly. The car had been sitting for quite a while (maybe 2 months) allowing the old hydraulic followers to dry out. One the car was running, after about half a mile the engine suddenly ran quietly. Probably down to worn lifters and possibly oil pan O' rings needing done.
