I currently am on the never ending 850 repairs. Nearly had it back on it's wheels today. 3/4 wheels on. 4th wheel (LR) and the hub was stuck. Assumed had left the parking brake on. But no. Turned the hub in reverse and it was ok. Tried forward and it almost do a 360 and then do a hard clang! Oh dear me (or a very strong engineering equivalent was used). Brakes had been fine up to them when I tested previously.

Stripped the brakes and the found one of the parking brake shoes had delaminated. Could not see any other issues. Don't have spares but Napa had some NOS Altrom ones for $11 CDN. I phoned to confirm the price and they said yes that was the price and they had them in stock! I even got a AMA (AAA) membership 10% off that price!

Bought them, fitted them to that side, cleaned and refitted everything. Adjusted the parking brake and then applied it one or 2 times to settle it and......Bugger. Same thing. Looks like it is a bad or intermittent cable issue. It is weird that reversing the hub it releases immediately and then rotate it again and it is ok until the parking brake is ok.

Point of this is the owner asked if I can disconnect the cable as they don't use it.........................much...........! I said I am not willing to do that as it is an insurance inspection failure point. I don't want the liability. I might cut the cable to allow the car to be driven out to the front of my house to sit until a cable comes, but that is it!

 They're trying every method to sneakily dispose of it now.
Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV moved Stella production to four of its breweries in the US in February '21. It isn't classed as an "imported" beer anymore. Deep scientific analysis would be needed to determine if any Bud cross-contaminated the mash.

Code Purple here in DE at the moment (AQI 201-300), airport closed in Philly. At one point last week smoke detectors were going off inside peoples houses mid-state, but that may have been a smoke event from the forest fires in NJ.
No outside for me today either. Power went out earlier, burning diesel now.
Folks up in Ontario have their hands full with this mess.

There are times you wish you had just kept your mouth shut!!!!!!!!!! :o :(

I'm beginning to think about getting out of the P80 cars as these days they seem to just be endless repairs and little actual use. I don't mind tinkering on cars from time to time but not 7 days a week continuously. I'm getting too old and wide for that!

Seems every P80 that enters my garage just doesn't want to leave. I may have to get an eviction order..............

The Kat has nibbled at me a bit this year, but Evita and Shagg have been solid. I cant begrudge Shagg eating a valve at 250k after she gave me 20k of faithful Covid service running back and forth from Albany to LI for two years weekly. I do have to get Elizabeth the T5 back up and running, probably by dragging her down here to LI.

Im still pretty P80/2 Swedish in the new driveway...

Pulled the parking brake after trying multiple tests to try to prove the cable is the issues:

1) Removed the pads first. Applied the parking brake 2 or 3 times, hub was locked.
2) Removed the rotor, and tried reversing the adjuster so the star was forward, nit rearward as it was when I originally opened it. Checked with Volvo and there should be no real issue which way around it is fitted, but I have followed the parts drawing and face the adjuster star wheel to the front. No difference, brake rotor jammed with a clunk as before. Had to reverse the rotation to free it off.
3) Tried operating the parking with the rotor off to see if the cable and expander were moving. Nothing really noticeable. But releasing the parking brake did not seem to make a difference.
4) Removed all the brake parts and had my son pull the brake lever while I held the cable end at the wheel with pliers. Cable pulled toward the parking brake (front of the car) when the lever was pulled on. Releasing showed little release. Using a pry bar I could get the cable to move rearwards (which would release the rear shoes). This identified the issue was the cable.

Stripped the cable out and sure enough the casing had sheared at the mount forward of the rear wheel where the T30 screw holds the cable in place. This split kinks the cable or in this case had a rough edge to the break which acted as a brake on the cable release.

Cleaned every part and waiting for a replacement cable. Had to go Febi as OE are on a back order with no ETA. Hopefully arrives tomorrow.

Great work figuring that out Neil. One of these days I'll figure mine out. I find I use the parking brake much more when I've fixed it.

I've worked on these many times. They are finicky to set up but work well when you have them right.

I would probably have jumped straight to the cable, but I am not spending my money but a young interns, so I don't want to spend any more than we have to!

I spent some time reading the grest PVC / PTC cleaning tutorials for turbo engines in preparation to do my new T5M. I did the PVC on my 2000 NA (but might have mounted the intake wrong) so I'm familiar but needed to learn the turbo (and -98) bits.

I'm preparing a large parts order for usparts.volvocars.com in hopes that they have a 17.76% off sale for 7/4/23 like last year. Combined with local dealership 10% off upon pickup, that's a significant discount. Consider preparing orders for this sale opportunity.
