96 850 Parking brake cable options

Post by scot850 »

Need to replace the parking brake cable on this car. Just called Volvo and it is on back order with no ETA!! I tried Pro parts Sweden in the past and they were junk and didn't even fit. The only other option we have found is a Febi part. Has anyone tried these and they were ok?

I did see another Viaco option at Rock Auto, but again no knowledge of the manufacturer or their part quality. I think that was at Rock Auto for around $80 CDN of which shipping was about 40% of the cost.

Thanks,

Neil.

I'm also looking for parking brake cables, but for a 2000. Though they may be different, FCP had two reviews for the Volvo brand ones saying the Febi ones didn't fit. I've always heard Volvo or nothing for these. To order backordered parts, I recommend IPD (following up with an email or call to say you'll wait for it) or your local dealership.

We have a Febi one arriving tomorrow so we can see. 850 and S70 are different. I think wagons are also different.

Two years ago I used Volvo cables on a 98 V70 and they were/are terrific. FWIW.

I would prefer to use OE Volvo, but currently on back order with no ETA. That typically means 6-8 weeks. I need the car out of the garage as I have my own car to work on! I don't like aftermarket cables due to the amount of work involved, especially when I had to pull 2 aftermarket Pro-parts items that wouldn't allow the rear wheels to be fitted! I guess we will find out if it works when they turn up. I will carefully check the dimensions before even trying to fit it.

Out of curiosity, what symptom led you to replace the cables? On my 2000 V70, one side brake shoes don't retract a little slowly compared to the other side when the handle is lowered. That's prompting me to replace both cables, one for the drag and the other so there isn't a difference in the amount of stretch.

In this case the wheel fully locked after pulling the parking brake on. Only way it would release was to push the cable in toward the center of the car by the rear wheel and rotating the hub in reverse. The other usual symptom is the brake does not work at all and adjustment makes not difference.

The most common failure is just behind the screw mount just forward of the rear wheel by the rear suspension/jack point.

I have tried to replace cables only on S70 vehicles. Twice I purchased cables from FCP. The second set were FEBI. BOTH sets did NOT fit. One had a problem with the outer rubber jacket where it mounts onto the chassis near the delta link. This I was able to adjust by cutting the sheath and reposition the mount point that was incorrect. In the second FEBI set the actual cable was TOO LONG. No amount of adjustment at the hand brake allowed that brake shoes to contact the inner rotor surface.
I pulled two cables from the PnP. They were OEM and worked perfectly. I lubed the cables before using them on my car.
