08 S60 2.5 T Stuck fuel filter

Post by yanga001 »

So i had an issue where the fuel filter quick disconnect on the front will not release. Upon checking with a side profile boroscope it seems that the clip on one side has bent inwards and i stuck on the lip of the fuel filter.

The clips are not damaged in any other way but i cannot release said filter and am at an impass.

Plan 1:
Use an oscillating tool to cut the neck of the old filter, then use screw drivers to pry the clips and release the stuck neck.
Pros:
I can do it
Cons:
If i break the clip then well im a bit pooched

Plan 2: Take it to my mechanic on a weekday when I have time and have him remove it with whatever know how he has
Pros:
it will be done and any damage will also be repaired by my indy
Cons:
Delay

I was 4 hours into a 15 minute job when i finally threw in the towel on this. My ramps were broken by a friend by mistake and they are not available this weekend. The jackstands i have available are 6 tonner and are about a foot in height at their minimum. Consequently my jack cannot reach that height.

Little bit of frustration but live and learn

I own a jack, access wasnt an issue, it was how to get off the fuel filter without doing something i cannot reverse.

I was thinking about the design of the locking device and was wondering if anyone has used a fuel line disconnect tool with these quick connects. It should achieve the same goal and allow the filter to come off. I have one up north and may pick it up when i go up there later this week.

Not sure they would work or if you have enough room to get the tool in. If you do then it would be great to know for the future. I know from looking at the rusty remains of the filter on the 96 850 I was working on recently, there was not enough room to get anything in between the body of the filter and the clips. Been a while since I looked at a Ps version. Do they have longer inlet and outlet pipes?

Had a look at this FCP useful video. There is definitely more room between the fuel pipe connectors on the filter than on a P80. Still not sure that a fuel disconnect might work, but worth a try.

Get a pick, cut the snout of the fuel filter off, and work it in to get that spring to release. I’ve fought these a few times and they can be tough

How much farther North can you go from Ontario? Aren’t their dragons not too far yonder?

I’m with Abscate on the pick, having done three of these P2 fuel filter would think you’d be able to release the clip that way.

Common problem with any quick connect system.

Most of the time, the problem is that the O-ring on the INSIDE of the connector forms a bond with the nipple.

The TRICK is to ROTATE the fuel filter to break that bond.

Thanks guys. To answer scot850 question, yea they have a much longer neck and I could fit a 45 degree pick in but could not get the leverage to release the clip. That’s why I am thinking about the fuel line tool as it should evenly push aside the clip. I’ll try that first and if it fails I’ll decide between a neck cut or taking it to my mechanic.
