Hi all,
First of all, sorry for the long post, but I'm trying to describe the problem the best I can to get the best possible answers. I'm no stranger to cars or even older car electronics, but the thing is that I have this Volvo V70 2001 T5 with a DSTC issue that doesn't want to go away. The problem is that I have to spend the absolute minimum amount of money to get this thing repaired so I can't just randomly buy expensive parts and see what works and what doesn't.
So here we are, the infamous DSTC service required. The problem started a few years ago and it would only appear when it was cold. As soon as the car got warm, the warning disappeared. Some time ago the warning became permanent.
I've had various weird fault codes appear, but right now I'm in a situation where I have a persistent "ABS-00B6 Control module communication CAN or SAS internal fault".
Also, I am unable to calibrate the steering angle. Longitudinal accelerometer and ABS pressure sensor calibrations work fine. The steering angle reading is ridiculous, something like 1078 degrees or thereabouts, but it does change somewhat logically as I turn the steering wheel. Just can't zero it.
What I've done so far:
I bought a second hand SAS control unit (P9496959) located in the driver's side (left) footwell. It didn't work and gives me a few DTCs about configuration (SAS-E003 configuration fault Faulty configuration) and (ABS-00B5 Control module communication signal quality from SAS). Also the ABS-00B6 is still there, so I'm thinking the problem isn't this unit.
I've also checked the ABS controller (86194466) and the solder joints are fine. There was one fried MOSFET, which I replaced. There was no effect on the fault codes and indeed they do point towards the SAS instead of the ABS unit.
So... what's your verdict, would it be a waste of money to get a new SAS contract reel/sensor or is it the obvious choice? From what I've understood, the contact reel doesn't need programming and I could use a second hand unit?
Also, is there any way that these second hand control units such as the SAS control unit and the ABS unit can be reconfigured to work in your car DIY without having to visit an official Volvo service or is it always a software upload?
