2005 XC70 throttle body newbie!

Post by Ihc70 »

Hi guys. My daughter has a 2005 XC70 with 200k. She bought it from a family member who had it mechanic-serviced and took impeccable care. She drove it home from college, and to work for a few weeks, maybe 3000 miles or so, then we decided to do an oil change on it together. I have absolutely no Volvo experience at all, but am a more than capable DIYer. Changed the oil and filter, no prob, although I was surprised at how little oil we got out, maybe 3 qts or so, and drove it off the ramps. Everything fine. The next morning to go to work, Extremely rough idle and P2111 DTC code. I've read through the forums and found this is not an uncommon experience. Just dropped the throttle body and it was quite dirty and had carbon buildup. We cleaned that all up with carb cleaner and a toothbrush, reinstalled and no change. The idle may be a little smoother, but still in "reduced engine performance" and "check engine" mode. Looks like the PCV was cleaned, but not replaced, about 50k miles ago. Question, more cleaning necessary? Replace the TB? Tackle the PCV? What do you guys think is the best next step? We're willing to spend a bit if it will fix the problem. Thanks in advance.

I assume you cleared the code and it came back? Or were you not able to clear it?

Yeah, the code was there. Strangely, I need to run in through the onboard readout before it will pop up on my scanner, but pop up it does!

Here is a previous thread with a little bit of info on the code:

Separate from the code, I’m concerned about you only getting 3 quarts, should be 6 in a 2.5L 5 cyl…was it low on the dipstick and how many quarts did you put in? A rubber glove or plastic bag on the oil cap while hot should tell you if the crankcase has suction, sign of a good PCV system.

Re low oil level.
Classic problem for Volvo 2.5 T engine.
This engine, when getting older consumes about 1 qt for every 1,000 or 1,500 miles.

So, check oil and add oil (if necessary) every 1000 miles or so.

Yeah, I was concerned about the oil too. Must be burning it, but not visible. We'll be watching. I saw those other threads, thanks! All the connections and seals sure looked tight and complete. I'll try a vacuum test

So, I won't be able to dig in until the weekend, but it sounds like this, now. Almost like its sucking or there's too much oil.
