1994 850 (B5254S) head gasket diy.

Post by falcor75 »

I'm thinking of trying to tackle a head gasket change myself on my Volvo engined Special build but I would like to learn about the tricky stuff before I start.

I have done headgasket changes on a few VW's (1.6 GTI and 1.8T engines) but those all had the cams fixed in the head when you lifted the heads off the block. I researched a bit and there seems to be needed a special tool for keeping the valve cover in place while you undo the valve cover nuts?

Any other advice you can give? :)

Volvo procedure calls for two hold down clamps while removing or installing the cover but you can just keep pressure on the cover while install it with hand tools or use a C-clamp. It does not take a lot of force to hold it down

Many have also sucessfully pulled it down using four of the m7 cover screws and carefully screwing them down evenly to maintain an even gap as the cover goes on

For removing it, the glue keeps it down until the screws are removed, then you need to pop it up with careful light hammer blows on the removal lugs

It never hurts to watch Robert work. Sometimes he breaks stuff so we don't have to.
