Got Kat back on the road with double clamps and JB Weld on the rear most fuel line fix.

Hope to get most of Shagg head back on today

Battled with the North Carolina heat in NY of 87/87 heat/humidity. I warned the car gods I’ve got peeps in NC I can call and swap hot/humid for cold/icy and they backed off

Installed thermostat housing

Head on and torqued, water pipe , exhaust manifold, downpipe. Installed lifters. Taped spark plug o rings to top of cylinder head.

Yeah, you keep that icy stuff up there, we don't want it! I'll take the heat back!
It's a hot and humid one today after a nasty rainy week last week. I get to work outside today... fun times!

That is a major days work Abscate! I know who to call if I need to replace the valves on my car! What are your rates?? :D

Visited my new friends east of Calgary on the weekend to see if I could add any intelligence (well it was a long shot........! :lol:) to an issue they were having after fitting a replacement head on their 00 S70 base manual trans. They have a Dice unit that is not cooperating they bought recently and so I took mine and my old steam powered laptop to see if we would have any more luck. Also took my Autel 802 as well as back-up.

The father and son proudly showed me an impressively clean engine. There was concern of a knocking from the engine, so they wanted me to hear it as well as to help them diagnose a check engine light with rough running. The dad had just read about poor running issues with low batteries, so hoped having charged the battery over night that might be the last 2 issues.

Key in and turned, nothing, tried again, nothing. Not even a click from the starter motor. So added jumper cables and 2nd battery in case battery was bad. Still nothing. Checked the immobilzer as it is normally the #1 issue with no starter action. Locking the car, disconnecting and resetting the battery made no difference. Suggested we check the battery and found a loose small wire to the solenoid. Tightened that and the engine started right up and no check lights! The guys said it even sounded quieter!

Ran the engine for a while and all seems good. Like the 850 that had been sitting we hope that this car which has sat for a year and has old gas will run better once it gets a decent run. Certainly the 850 sounded similar and after 800m the engine quietened right down.

Switched off and checked with the Autel while my ancient laptop wheezed into life. No codes or pending codes. Then tried Vida/Dice and same thing, nothing.

The son then brought his 99 S70 GLT around so we could scan to see if it had any codes. Boy-oh-boy did it ever! I don't think I have ever seen so many codes on one car. Left my computer with them so they could work through the issues and try to eliminate them. They also wanted to check the mother's car (00 C70 conv) as it had some warning lights on.

Left there and went to a junk yard I have only been to once after a heads up by my Volvo mechanic buddy. He told me there were 2 x 00 V70R's in the yard! One is the dark metallic red. I'm sure there were only 9 sold in 00 in North America! What a shame. :o :cry:

Cars have been fairly well picked over, but there is still several 00R specific parts there. Looks like folk have pulled mainly regular parts leaving many R parts intact or trashed.

I pulled several parts in the limited time I had, especially the parking brake expanders that are NLA to join the calipers my buddy had already liberated for me.

Both cars still look like they have good bumper covers. I am thinking of rescuing them as I think they are NLA. One is red and the other silver. I will look more closely. There are also a few other parts of interest. My buddy is also thinking of a return visit so we may head over later this week.

My friend with the 850 sedan has decided with is mum to go ahead and have the rust in the rockers tackled. He is hoping to head over on Friday so we can remove the rocker covers, front and rear fender liners and hopefully the rear bumper (brackets are toast). We will leave that until last so we can have a good look at the rocker condition first!

Just realized as I don't have my Dice and Vida, I need to remind myself how to remove the rear bumper, especially when the bolts are 100% guaranteed to break. I have been able to persuade the rear bumper off my R when this happened without having to take to Roberts' method of removal. Thought as I seem to being asked more on 850's these days and working on them, it may make sense to add an 850 Haynes manual to my manual library. Went on line and Amazon.ca wants $55 for it! Ouch!

Checked elsewhere and found a local Canadian Tire with one on clearance for $8 CDN ($6 US)! Hopefully it is not the stock error book!

I have ordered it and hopefully it will be real!

Top, just a 10mm deep socket
Bottom, SMSLL extension plus socket.

See scale for lengths.
Used the Erik method on the gasket this time. Glued gasket to pipe with permatex aviation , then installed head without bolts. Installed water pipe bolts loosely. Torqued head , then torqued water pipe bolts. Probably overthinking this

Lower one is the harder one as you have to play Tetris with the socket extender to get the right approach angle. Remember the head and engine slant so the bolt does not go in horizontal

Pseudo Random Musings on m12x157 bolts 6842347

Volvo bolt is $8 , Rein bolts are $2. I’ve mind debated if I should go Volvo on a turbo with boost or on an NA with higher compression. I guess I should research the actual cylinder pressure in a turbo , but if the HP goes 160 to 250 that’s a 50% increase , which is probably guidance.

Reuse of bolts. Volvo tech here says they reuse bolts once then discard. Inspect bolt heads damage , you don’t want to round these off

The torque from inside out to 20,60 Nm then to 130 angle torque.

I used a 3/8 socket on my torque wrench then moved to 24 inch 14mm 1/2 socket for the angle.

Three stage torque for lightly oiled bolts

Angle torque. There is a lot of tension on these. You need the bolt to move smoothly 130 degrees including the return angle when you slack off the breaker bar. Mark your socket with 60 degree hexes above the cover so you can see them then put a sharpie reference on the head cover the extra 10 is 1/5 the way the two 60 degree hexes you pass to 120. This probably is not critical as this is just tensioning the bolts into the clamping regime; we don’t get a lot of loose head bolts here

I’m guessing the head bolts are ending up at 250 Nm torque , not a place for cheap Harbor Freight tools

Make sure you fully seat the 14 for the angle torque. Mine often hung up 1/2 way down. A reference mark for vertical depth on the socket helps here

I wish the engineers who designed the clips for the interior trim on 850s, the dashboard plastic mounting tabs, and the v70 AWD angle gear weren't most likely retired by now so I could call Volvo HQ and yell at them instead of throwing wrenches.
