I haven't been up here since I was a child. I need to go up there soon.
This is the road from Montana into Wyoming and Yellowstone Park at the NE entrance. You climb up the valley from the ski town of Red Lodge into a canyon until you're sort of boxed in, then you switchback up the side and onto the Beartooth Plateau and pass at about 11,000 feet. Across the plateau past hundreds of pocket lakes in the rock, then wind down into Cooke City MT and Yellowstone Park. There's a homemade ski area in a bowl on the plateau which runs in the summer for ski training and goofing off.
This is a very popular tourist route, favorite with the Harley crowd, and a lot of cyclists ride this pass.
They start clearing the highway in April. Did well this year and it was open by the end of April. Still might snow or slide on you.
Montana takes care of their side of the border, Wyoming DOT and the Park Service clear the road on their side.
I could watch these all day....
Good video here, with all the work the mechanics do to keep the machines running...
I believe these deep troughs are on the Wyoming side, up on top.
And then there are "debris flows" when it all melts too fast...
Summer!
And there, in the right background, is the Bears Tooth -
