Hi all,
Last year I bought an '07 XC70 at 200k miles *cheap* but in *great* cosmetic condition that I'd like to drive another 100k. I'm looking for advice on what else to do preventatively. Here's what I've done in the last 10k miles:
- Replace PCV system
- Mobil 1 3309 trans fluid replace and trans in-line Magnefine filter
- Timing belt, tensioner, idler, and water pump
- Serpentine belt, tensioner, idler
- Rotors, pads, calipers, hoses all around
- Wheel bearings all around
- Sway bar links all around
- New springs and struts all around
- New engine mounts all around
- New drive shaft
- Angle gear fluid replace
- Haldex fluid replace
- New coils, plugs
- Re-wrapped all the wiring in the harness
- New exhaust system mounts
- New radiator hoses upper and lower
- New coolant expansion tank
- New turbo control valve and new silicon turbo hoses
- New intercooler hoses
- All other fluids replaced (brake w/Pentosin stuff, power steering I think also w/Pentosin stuff)
I think that's a pretty good list. Are there other things that should just be done preventatively at 200k miles to keep me from ending up at the side of the road at some point?
What else should I replace preventatively ('07 XC70)

Excellent list. Lower control arms done? About the only other item I can think of.

OMG I forgot that I did the lower control arms and ball joints.
Yes, done. And battery of course.
I do have a radiator waiting to go in when I get to it (no leaks that I can see on the current one), and I am toying with the idea of pre-emptively replacing the alternator. Reason I haven't pulled the trigger: I wouldn't pre-emptively buy OEM, too expensive. So I'm a bit torn, as the OEM one is running quiet and stable at 14v and I hate to replace a "seems fine" Bosch with something else just because.
One thing I have never done on a P2... I seem to remember reading/hearing that there is some sort of an ECU cooling fan that can go out. Is that legit? I did pop open the ECU box but I don't see a fan in there. If there is such a beast and I've just never encountered it, does anyone have an illustration of where it lives?

One other thought…just did starters on my 08 C70 at 120k miles and 08 S60 at 150k miles. Inexpensive lifetime warranty ones available. Pretty easy job on a P2.

I was going to mention the radiator and heater hoses because anything failing in the cooling system can leave you on the side of the road or overheat the engine. Do you have any history on the radiator in the car, was it ever previously replaced? From experience, buy OEM heater hoses if you do replace them. For the alternator you can replace just the voltage regulator with brushes as one option.leapdragon wrote: ↑02 Jul 2023, 22:45 OMG I forgot that I did the lower control arms and ball joints.Yes, done. Heater core will leak soon. Check for grease in the lower vents, they should be dry unless the core is started to leak.
Add another Magnefine into PS reservoir return line.
Valve stem caps are dead at this mileage, but it's a PITA to replace them with the head in the engine bay. Also impossible to degrease, and oil is the warrant of the new caps popping up.
Front oxygen sensor needs replacement. Rear one you can wait until it dies, it does not affect engine performance.
Add external ATF cooler, will help greatly prolonging like of ATF and everything within transmission.

Keep a spare PEM module on you as a "just in case" kind of thing.
Engine air filter?
Cabin air filter if you notice it.
Grease the seat tracks
Alternators i would just grab one from a junk yard and keep it on hand. They seem fairly beefy on these cars and should not be too much of a problem.
If you have xenons then keep a ballast spare (yard) and maybe some HID's spare as the bulbs do go out over time.
