Well it is hard to get a better present than this if you own a 00 V70R. With so many parts NLA on this car with unique to R parts, but also AWD P80 parts that many are now NLA. So imagine if a buddy drops off 2 rear used but good rear brake calipers for a 2000 R! Unique to the R and only 2000 Model Year. They are like smaller front single piston caliper with a bracket, vented rear rotor, and unique rear dust shield to fit it.
Those 4 parts have been NLA since I replaced my cars' rear sub-frame when it corroded and cracked about 7 years or so ago. In fact they were NLA even before that. I found 2 reconditioned rear calipers in Canada, one in Montreal and the other in Vancouver! I have been looking for a good back up pair for 7 years!!
So when my buddy called from the junkyard locally to say that the 2nd 2000 V70 in the yard was also an R and it still had the rear brakes I asked if he could pull them for me. Awesome guy that he is (and a former Volvo dealer mechanic), he did just that and dropped them off yesterday, and he even put them in some nice blue boxes!
This is what I love about the Volvo enthusiasts, they go over and above for others!
I just have to give them a good clean and lick of paint! They can then join the other rocking horse poo parts like the rear brake backing plates for the 00 R which are mint and powder coated, a pair of AWD rear parking brake expanders, and parking brake cable retaining clips for the rear hubs. All long NLA parts but stashed for the future. Add that also to 00 R specific but not necessarily NLA parts like an ECU, TCU, ETM (untested), 5 speed auto box from an R (untested), rear differential (from a 00R but AWD usable) and VC unit. All I now need are and angle gear and prop-shaft as I also have the rear axles. Then I have an almost complete driveling short of the rear hubs!
Like I said, great to have good Volvo friends!
Neil.

Nice. Get them powder coated in Laser Blue. That might be a better finish than paint.

In our ownership, the car is not run in the winters. The current calipers were fitted about 7 years ago and it was being used in the winters back then. They are still in good shape now. The issue here is that I have not been able to find a re-build kit, even from ATE. I am therefore reluctant to strip them for coating in case any seals get damaged.

Makes me wonder if the boot sizes are used by some other caliper, thus available under some other name. ATE technical support might be cajoled into helping. Or measure the sizes and poke around online. That's what I did when looking for replacement pistons. Found rear pistons at a motorcycle shop (though I missed them sitting right there at Rock Auto).

I tried several times and never got a response from them other than to say they were no longer available. Good suggestion, maybe worth trying to call them direct. Thanks!

The last junk yard visit allowed the addition of yet another NLA part(s). This time included the rear AWD parking brake expanders in nearly new condition to add to my stash, and a set of 2000 V70R rear brake dust shields which have been NLA for at least 8 years!
They are not in the first flush of youth, but are still solid. I had to straighten them as they were bent to remove them from the rear axle. You cannot remove and fit these in standard form without pulling the rear hubs which require a large press. The way most junkyards remove them for you (well the ones that care about these things) cut a slot on the narrow part where the caliper fits so they can bend the section enough to get it behind the hub bearing and then tack weld the slot to hold it in together before bolting it in place.
Not sure what to do with these as I have a mint pair that have been powder coated should I need them.
There is a thin foam seal that goes behind these between the dust shield and the rear hubs. I made these myself when I worked on my car as they were on back order. I do now have a new pair and if you want to make them I can supply a template to use.

I need them for my 1999 awd but I think they are different. I might be able to use them as templates to adapt others to fit.

1999 rear brakes are different for the rear which includes the backing plate. So these are not for your car. They may fit, but nothing else will.
From what I recall your rear brakes will be the same as the 98-00 V70XC brakes at the rear. I don't have my Vida computer here as a friend has borrowed it so I can't confirm. Do you still have your XC? If so compare the rear brakes. The backing plates for all P80 AWD cars are NLA, which includes the anti-rattle shield which bolts on with the rear caliper. Unfortunately I had a set of the calipers and plates but sold them recently. Calipers are harder to find but I believe still available. Abscate might know from his S70 AWD. I know he is looking for backing plates as well for that. I think it is a 1999 as well.
As for the front brakes, the calipers are all the same. The only difference will be if your car is fitted with the larger 302mm diameter rotors. The difference is a larger and slightly different caliper bracket. Those are available from FCP aftermarket from time-to-time, and sometimes also from IPD. What I did when I needed new brackets due to wear on mine was exchange mine for a set of NAPA rebuilt units which have refurbished brackets and calipers both which are well done. I used the brackets but the calipers are still in a box!
I am trying to find a set of rear caliper dust shields for Abscate on the West coast. On Vancouver Island there is a Volvo breakers called Chapman Motors at Cobble Hill. They don't use salt on the roads so that is where I got my rear shields for my R. I plan to call them later today so will see what we can get if anything there.

I just re-read your original thread. Are you sure your car is a 99? I think those are 2000 rear brakes on it as I think they are vented rotors which the others don't have. If the caliper is a single piston and a bracket like the front then these back plates will be the right ones.
If you can check my thread above and the link I added to your original thread on brakes check if you can see the part numbers on the rear brake calipers. My picture of one of the calipers above (ignore the part number on the boxes). If one matches then you have the later brakes and the vented rotors are also correct. If you can also post pictures of the back of the front rotors of the caliper brackets I can ID which brake caliper brackets you have.
I will keep the backing plates for you until we figure this out.
Neil.
