I did this on both my 855 @210k and my xc90 @90k. Funny enough the 855 transmission fluid was only mild discolored with 210k miles on original fluid. My xc90 @90k miles was like pumping out liquid charcoal. I buy the Aisin Warner fluid from FCP in cases of 12L.

Today was all about finding stuff. I thought the rear spoiler I had was from an S70 and I also thought I had the relevant brackets. Promised them to a friend of a friend only if I could find the brackets. Spent the afternoon rummaging through boxes of bolts, screws and other assorted small parts. So when that failed I looked at my stock list I keep for the larger stuff and maybe 5% of the smaller stuff I have and there it was. V70/wagon spoiler brackets! Climb up a ladder, get spoiler down and sure enough it is a wagon one and matches my V70 one but in white.

So waste of time, but now I at least have correctly identified and found the parts (I believe the mounts are NLA for all P80 rear spoilers now).

I have to get find time to clear all the small parts, catalogue and find locations for them to make finding them much easier!

Strange thing is I may have actually got a set of sedan brackets. Having looked up my 1998 Volvo hard copy parts book, at least I now know what they look like and might even have seen them or something similar while looking for the others!

Funny how life goes, had a few requests for NLA parts in the last couple of days, and hopefully they can go to new owners to help them maintain their pride and joys!

15 minutes of smoke and clatter then Shagg settled into silky smooth idle

Question: how do you keep all the subtle routing of hoses straight in the engine bay?

Answer: pop the hood on of your other 4 1999s…..

Especially when it comes from me!!

Joking aside. My new friend has rebuilt his 00 S70 NA and is concerned it is still noisy and he may have got the timing wrong or the VVT is not operating correctly. So some rattling and smoke is normal on first start up and for maybe 15 minutes or so afterwards?

Absolutely. Smoke is all the grease from your hands burning off, and the clattering is from the lifters being dry from sitting. Very normal for a little while. If it doesn't go away, then there's cause for concern.

I think that is their concern, as they rattling is not going away. I'll see if I can get my Volvo mechanic friend to pay them a visit.

Thanks.

Ah, so he’s been driving it and it still won’t go away? That’s cause for concern. I’d take a listen around and pinpoint the noise. It’s possible that something with the VVT is screwed up, but it would be unlikely that there aren’t any other issues regarding performance or idle quality.

His 2000 NA will have 6mm valves and mechanical lifters, so thst rattle needs to be investigated

It took about 15cminutes with light revving for the lifters to pump up

Has anyone taken their plastic rocker covers off recently? I was under the impression that p80+ Volvos were pretty resistant to rusting, despite being ~25 years old. I thought being able to push my hand through the rocker panel on one of my cars was a fluke, but after searching for a good panel to cut out, I found 3/4 parts car rockers to be in terrible shape, with one the pinch weld crumbled with just finger pressure.
The one strong panel I found to cut out even had a bit of surface rust on the inside, and after poking at what looked to be good clean metal under some paint bubbles on another panel, it was weak enough to stick a screwdriver right through.
