There is some as-yet unidentified spooge on the carpet under the aftermarket rubber floor mats. I resisted the urge to taste test it.

Always tough to resist that urge. You never know if it might taste good!

That intake filter looks like my 1 year old filter in my R after 1000km of use last summer with all the forest fires up here!

Shook it out, looks good as new (might have been original to the car, late '96 build.)

It may look good but are there fine particulates clogging the filter paper? What should cause us to replace an engine air filter (and cabin air filter)?

We are poking fun at the good Doctor, famous for installing 'used but known good' parts on occasion. The "Volvo" branded filter went in the trash.
I tend to put a fresh filter in cars new to me, just so I have a baseline on routine maintenance items. For cars that don't see miles in dusty conditions the schedule in the owners manual would be a good guide.

Same here. When it comes to filters, they're cheap insurance to keep things performing smoothly. Especially cabin filters, that's the air you breathe... I want them to stay clean!

5 cylinder reassembly update.

This is as clean as she's gonna get. No amount of brake cleaner, shop rags and razor blades can get this any cleaner.

Don’t forget to remove that old cylinder 1 exhaust gasket.

I admire you guys who do those head jobs with the manifold on. I fight them off so my meaty hands fit around stuff

Also, if you don’t pick out all the paper, you get to drop,the pan and do an oil oring job , too!
