I didn’t mention this earlier in the thread because it didn’t fit the order of what I checked but Neil and now Chuck too for the win: when it got really bad I finally checked fuel pressure, steady 15 psi.
Swapped fuel filter, no change. Fortunately I have a couple spare fuel pumps from the junkyard. So I pulled the fuel pump.
Diagnose the issue anyone?

Lets take a look for a bright blue spark at a plug grounded to the top of the head to rule out an aging coil. Those can go wonky on you as a function of time and temperature.

I ran into this SAME issue on the '96 GLT I had. It would just randomly run rough and want to die, no power, etc. Other times run great.
Found this when I pulled the pump.
I was going to suggest this earlier, because it sounded just like my problem. (I blame being busy at work trying to fix a work machine problem)

Is that the correct clamp type? Oetiker would work better than that or a proper fuel pipe clamp.
