Planning to change my oil this weekend and just bought the 5 quart jug of Mobil1, fully synthetic. Just wondered if I have an extra bottle of 10W-40 lying around it will hurt anything if I mix it with the 5 quart jug of 5W-30?
I need a total of 6.1 qts., and I hated to pay the $12 for another single quart.

Never recommended to mix viscosity. Just go buy another quart or another 5 quart jug.

I’ve done it many times. You can do the math to determine the viscosity change. I’ve even topped with Delvac 1300 15w40 ($14/gal at Walmart) during the summer. Not probably the best if you want to run extended drain intervals but for my 5000 miles or less I’m not concerned. I’d be more concerned diluting the additive package vs the viscosity.

Just try to stay in one brand when mixing.

Don’t mix Shell and Mobil brand oils
