2006 S60R Airbag Service Urgent Message

Post by Ethan5150 »

Hi folks, I recently purchased an S60R from a guy who had done the airbag recall service. However, the "airbag service urgent" message still comes on occasionally. He said he had just reset it when that happened periodically and I'm ok to do the same. I just put my cheapo ODBII scanner on and it said there were 8 codes, however it wouldn't actually display them, nor did the message go away when I chose to clear the codes.

So my two questions are: is there something I should do to get this message to stay off for good? There isn't a Volvo dealership on the island (Hawaii) so that's not an option. Which perhaps brings me to question 2: why doesn't my cheapo scanner show the codes and/or clear them? Is there a cheap scanner I should purchase that will work with this car?

Thanks for your input!

What code are you getting?

I have an iCarSoft reader, could clear some SRS codes but my 02 S60 had a ‘Internal SRS Fault’ that required controller replacement. eBay unit of same part number worked sort of—no fault there but was configured for a S80 so I get a configuration fault. Yet to finish sorting out, still no airbag.

My awful Volvo dealer in town has not returned three phone calls to confirm they can reset the parameter or reprogram. Glad they are safety focused lol. I’m sure they’d prefer a $200 diagnostic and $800 controller, rant over.

SRS codes are not really erased, they are recorded and hidden , terminate stay resident (TSR) kinda thing.
Theres a limit to how many times you can do that.
I read theres a way around it don't recall what it is.

You ought to plan on getting vida on a laptop.
If you already own a laptop w/ 4mb RAM you can buy the program on a thumb drive with its own OS.
Then you need a mongoose interface (dice clone).
Maybe ask David if he has any suggestions on the SRS problem.

Yeah I also get the code when I reflash my ECU, and dread the day I have to tamper with the SRS module memory. If someone has a way to permanently reset the ABS codes, so they dont just get hidden, that would be nice.

There is eBay sellers that claim they can reset them, just send it in. No experience with them but cheap enough may be worth a try.

Makes me wonder if my original SRS ecu just hit the limit on number of errors vs just a fault.

This one may be for you, no shipping parts but more hands on and involved.

Thanks jonesg, so on that site, do I just download the ISO and purchase the cable? I'm comfortable loading the ISO onto a USB drive for booting but there are 2 cable options - can I go with the cheaper of the two for my purposes?

I have no clue what an ISO is, I'm a retired chef, want fries with that ?
I just related what I did and it works very well, it does take a bit of juggling to get the boot sequence working but David walked me through it.

Many people opt for the cheaper mongoose cable JRL ? I don't know if its better or limited, I have the dice unit.
Ask David or post in the VIDA forum.

For the SRS problem, talk to this guy.
