1996 Volvo 850 -- have basic questions

Post by surfbug1 »

Hi!

considering adding another one to the stable ...

1995 850 sedan (these are all turbo 5 cylinders, right?)

the seller doesn't know the model number and is not near the car. I know it's not an R model (booo! 🥺)

so, besides the basic timing belt servicing and bringing the car to stage 0.....anythignelse to look for?

I have a 1998 v 70 wagon now....that I've had for 3 years

kinda the same kettle of fish? or any major differences I should look out for?

thanks!

Could be a non-turbo or turbo version. They sold both.

ok, if it's an NA motor, I've see threads on adding a turbo

is that just intercooler, exhaust, and turbo?

or does it mean intake piping and MFA and computer too?

Adding to a turbo to an NA motor is a massive undertaking.

This link tells you that the 6th and 7th digit of the Vin# tells you the engine type.

https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/vin_850.shtml

There is a list below the Vin# explanation that tells you the code for each engine option. Typically an S or FS are non-turbo

Hope this helps,

Neil.

The sixth digit will be a 5, if the seventh digit is also a 5 it's N/A; any other number is turbo of some sort.
No matter what the truck tuner kids on YouTube say, putting a turbo on anything that wasn't born that way is asking for bent rods and/or holed pistons, among other issues, as the good Doctor pointed out.

foggydogg, check the link above. A 5 as the 6th digit and then another number other than 5 in the 7th digit is a turbo is not correct. 51, 54 55 are all NA motors.

Maybe in your world, but not in the US market.
As I already stated, a 5 in the seventh place is NA. Nothing else on planet Earth matters to the original poster on this thread.
