Re: 2008 3.2 XC70 229K Miles, Cold Take Off Hesitation - No Codes Set

Post by Steve H »

I drove the car to work today. When I cranked it, first thing this morning, I let it run about 30 seconds and then tested the throttle response. It was crisp and sharply responsive. My theory was before when it responded as "nobody was home under the hood" that it would not have had crisp throttle response had I tested it before I pulled out of my car port. The car sat a work 10 hours and when I got in it this afternoon I did the same test and it responded fine. When I pulled out of the parking lot, unlike last Friday when I did the same thing and the car was acting like it was going to smoother itself to death, this time it took off and ran fine. Now the only thing I have done to the car is to remove and clean the MAF sensor with electronic cleaner. I do not want to change the purge valve and clean the throttle body, next steps, until I see the car have the problem again.

Steve,

Thanks for the update.

I took a similar approach for the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor.

I actually bought one for my 2008 LR2 but it ended up being installed on my 2010 S80 because that's where the failure happened first.
So I bought another sensor and eventually it was installed on my LR2 (when I got the check engine light) so now I have two "New" sensor installed and Zero on the shelf.

The Purge Valve failed on me when my Daughter was about to go to the Airport to drop off the Cousins so I replaced it. It was completely random or failing intermittently if you prefer.

Good luck

Paul

One last thought - I never drive the 3.2 until it has dropped from fast idle to slow idle. The ECU need time to make sure everything is working properly and to adjust accordingly.

Thank you for confirming that. I thought the issue was with my user ID. I drove my 2008 Volvo XC70 Friday to work and today for a 70 mile trip and no issues what-so-ever. Either my problem has went into hiding or it was fixed by cleaning the Mass Air Flow Sensor with electronic cleaner.

You guys should have gotten notifications from this topic now. I traced it down to a non-ASCII dash in the title. Looks like a normal dash, but wasn't. I replaced it with a bog standard dash.

As I told Steve over email, this scenario is not ... uh ... ideal. It's a bug. I used to write software, and this result is not elegant, and I'm sure the authors of the board software don't write phpBB to fail in this way. I'll open a bug report.

Thanks for everyone's reports!

It looks like it's been found, reported, and fixed, but the fix appears in a later version of the software (that I need to update the forum to): https://tracker.phpbb.com/browse/PHPBB3-17058
