Depending on how many hours a day you do, the parking brakes and rear brakes are not too horrible. Hardest part is removing and re-installing the parking brake cable.
I have written this up recently when I worked on the 96 850 NA. The #1 thing is getting the mounting/retaining T30? screw that located the parking brake forward of the rear wheels. Plenty of penetrating oil, and clean the bolts from both sides. That bolt is NLA, so you may have to find and alternate regular bolt to replace them.
The other PITA, is getting the cable out of the rear hub. It is held in by a rubber 'O' ring and friction. Again plenty of penetrating oil in advance. Also, I remove the plastic deflector from the rear of the dust shield by drilling out the rivet and taking it off to give more access.
Neil.

Thanks. I already started spraying the T30 bolts in July when I wanted to do the brakes. I'll spray them again and the o-rings prior to starting. I'll have the entire rear hub assemblies apart in order to install good used dust shields. They seem critical since the shoes press against them. The current dust shields are horribly rusty.

Let me know when you're ready to do the AC system. I can meet you at makerspace and let you borrow my gauges and compressor, or you can swing by my house and use them there.

Thanks, that's a huge help. I was sure I'd have to run to the dealership for the discharge and recharge. A/C is pretty low on my list and I may not even get to it considering the cost. First, I've got to get through inspection.
Geronimo is the gift that keeps on giving. I started the rescue to help a friend who needed it for reliable transport. Though I got it back on the road, she gave up on it after 11 months, so I bought it from her for the price of parts she put in. Now my girlfriend is using it to commute while I continue improving it. I'm getting no use out of it but other people have. Hopefully whoever I sell it to will appreciate it.

Just about every vehicle in my yard has or had a leaky AC system at one point or another. It turned out to be far easier to own the tools than to keep renting them from O'Rileys or taking it to someone else to do.
Same thing goes for the parking brakes. I've done them so many times, I could probably do them with my eyes closed at this point.

I plumbed in a full size vacuum gauge I use on the high side for leak testing. You can see a small leak right away vs the tiny gauge on the edge of the low pressure side . It’s nice when they hold vacuum overnight so you know your charge will holdlevalexi wrote: ↑23 Aug 2023, 02:49 Just about every vehicle in my yard has or had a leaky AC system at one point or another. Firefox asked me to add the fuel filter pictures of the 2 fuel filters that we swapped out yesterday for comparison to the one Firefox removed that was pin-holed. The first 2 pictures are the 'Titanic' sourced filter from the 96 850 NA base. Brand is unknown
Next 2 are from the 97 850 AWD and had about 60,000 miles and 6 years under the car. In fairness the 850 one is tucked up high above the rear axle, where the FWD is just forward of the RHR wheel. The part number was 0 450 905 21which is a Bosch part number:
Both cars were fitted with new Mann WK 849 fuel filters. I both cases we had to pack out the circular holding brackets to keep the filters held tight as the bracket could not tighten far enough! The 850 bracket was actually ok and some surface rust on the outside but the inner side was still good and had the dimples that dig into the filter to hold it.
Hope this is of help.
Neil.
