01 V70 tailgate does not lock with remote or door switch

Post by mp5802 »

I've had my 01 V70 T5 for 9 years. Recently, I tried to lock the car with the remote and all 4 doors lock properly, but not the tailgate. One can just open the tailgate, and then sometimes the security alarm does sound. There's no audible click either at the tailgate when trying to lock the car. I've been searching a bit, and a few recommendations say that the harness wires may be broken where it passes through the left hinge area. The fuse is good. Other ideas?

Broken wires in the left hinge area is a known problem. Do you have any other problems with the tailgate? The wires going through the left hinge area will affect the rear lock, license plate lights, rear wiper, upper brake light, tailgate open (ground wire through switch in tailgate latche), rear defroster; do you have any problems with any of these other items mentioned? If so, likely broken wires in the hinge area.
There's also a relay associated with the rear latch, see attachment, RMI19

Yes, I found 5 broken wires in that bundle going through the left hinge. I repaired them, and the tailgate now locks again, although, now, the darn handle won't always open the tailgate after unlocking it unless you fiddle with it (sticking somehow). Well, being able to lock the vehicle is most important. Thanks for your help;

Don’t forget they can short and blow fuse 6, which wipes out your 2/76 lock controller , which means your car will then no crank no start….

Just went through this with my 2006 S60.
New wiring harness ~ $50 or so.
PN is different for V70 vs S60.
I fix a lot of stuff, but this is a part I would not bother to fix using butt connectors, simply bc they keep failing at that age.

Just get a new harness.

I posted the trick for S60 in this forum.
