Where to buy bulk rivets for mudflap and wheel liner?

Post by FireFox31 »

Does anyone know a supplier, brand, and part number for the special plastic/metal rivets which hold on the mudflaps and plastic wheel well liners? They are part # 979878 for $2.39 list, $2.70 at FCP. I've read many times that these plastic/metal rivets must be used for mudflaps so they'll break away upon impact while an all-metal one would hold fast, making the impact tear more things.

Or does anyone know the detailed specs of this so I can try McMaster-Carr or something. Sizes, materials, breaking threshold, etc all might be required. Thanks, I need a bunch of these, but not at $2.40 each.

FCP lists them as 4 x 21mm.
I haven't tried using these ones from HF below, but there is an assortment of 5mm, 6.3mm and 6.6mm diameter POM plastic rivets with different lengths ranging from about 15mm to 25mm available for relatively low cost, including some that are 5mm x 17.2mm -- these might be close enough to work.

I Googled “plastic push pin flare rivets” and got a few thousand hits with many promising options. Surely you’ll find something in there. Good luck, Peter

I think I bought a large bag (maybe 100?) a long time ago and I think it was from eeuro. It was way cheaper than Volvo.

There is this place:

https://store.voluparts.com/979878-rivet/

$1.08/rivet

Then there is this place where Volume is king in the UK:

https://vehicleclips.co.uk/products/pla ... 1818210538

Works out at $15 US for 100!! Shipping to Canada nearly doubles that doubles that price, so about $0.30/rivet

That is cheap!

Thanks for all the feedback. I've got a lot of bumper work to do and don't want each rivet to be the price of a gourmet cookie. The thought of wasting so many cookies...

Thanks, I had no idea what they were called. This helps.

I really prefer this Rexka unit over the original style - no plastic just all aluminum, slightly wider skirt, a bit cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H881TX7

Not sure why the Amazon link isn't displaying (form me?) but it's also discussed in this old post, with links: viewtopic.php?t=92044

I strongly recommend you never use full aluminum rivets on the mud-flaps. Sure ok on the fender liners, but the ones for the mud-flaps are there for a reason. They are designed to allow the mudflap to come away without distorting the front fenders if you catch them on something like a kerb or snow/ice pile. I have had to try and straighten a few fenders after this happened with aluminum rivets.
