My ac compressor makes a similar noise when turned on, but it seems you found your problem. If you are looking for a new engine, ebay has them for around $1000.

Possibly the engine ingested the dreaded steel ball from the PCV system and it pounded the spark plug.
A borescope might tell you a lot about what happened in there.
