I'm stumped. What is the object detection system called?

I have purchased a 2011 XC70 and it beeps at me whenever I get near any object. It's really getting annoying. For example, it beeps every time I am backing out of my driveway to tell me there is a mailbox there! Oddly, it beeps when the front of the car gets next to the mailbox. It also beeps when I approach a curb or when there is a car parked next to me when I am backing out of a parking space. What is this system called, and can I turn it off? The car does not have the optional Blind Spot Information System.

That is the Park Assist System. Mine does not work but from the way you're describing it, I'm kind of glad it doesn't!
