2004 XC70 AWD - Gas Tank Removal - Rear drive train Removal?

Post by cuhfs »

I've started the process to remove the fuel tank in an effort solve a hidden leak issue. Car is raised, Exhaust is out, Trying to drop the drive train in the rear. I removed the Hex Bolts from the rear angle gear and tried to separate the drive train. Unsuccessful.
Do I have to remove the front hex bolts at front angle gear too in order to get it out of the rear? How do I get the drive train out of the rear angle gear. Its loose and just does not have enough clearance. If possible Id like to leave the front connected and just drop the rear so I can sneak the tank out (if possible).

I would avoid doing that.
have you removed the pump access cover (under the bench seat), almost all leaks are from the pump top mount...or fuel filler tube.
almost all leaks can be fixed without taking the rear drive out.

This is a leak not under bench seat or near fuel filler tube. I'm "all in" committed to pulling the tank. Just need to know how to remove the drive-line.in the rear angle gear. I have removed the hex bolts from the hub but the driveline wont clear it (the hub) to drop out the drive line.

To remove the driveshaft from the haldex it first needs to be removed from the front differential. After getting the front removed just let it sit to the side of the differential.

There are two threaded holes in the rear of the haldex. Some members had luck popping the rear CV joint using an air chisel thru those holes.

Thanks I will look to do that.. I hear you saying there is no way to release the drive train from the rear if the front is connected.

There's not enough room to remove the driveshaft from the rear flange just at the back, you must remove the front from the angle gear and the bearing support in the middle. This is easiest if you remove the muffler hanger and exhaust hanger and lower the exhaust and move it towards the driver's side. Be cautious when taking the shaft out when you have all the Allen screws out, the CV's will try to come apart and it gets messy!

You need to slacken the front CV bolts and unbolt carrier bearing plate.

Take your time and treat all the rust above the tank properly.
