1988 240 Stalls and hesitates when very hot

Post by davey77 »

When the first hot days arrived in Vegas - over 110 my 240 Volvo started to hesitate and stall and stops after about 20 minutes of driving - after it cools off for 30 minutes it starts and runs very well. Then it does the same thing - first time I have had this happen was hot weather. Some friends suggested a malfunctioning coil may be the issue or a MAF. Not sure. When it runs, it runs like a dream - drove it from NY to Vegas in Jan - going back soon. Any help will be highly appreciated. It has around 200 k miles and well maintained.
Thanks.

New intank fuel pump needed, most likely

Keep tank filled up

Did you ever figure out what was wrong? Why the stalling was occurring? I have the exact same problem. '91 240 DL with about 250k miles on it now - for the last 5 years I've been fighting this. I've replaced so many parts by now I can't even believe it. The problem is not (although it could be in another's case) the in tank pre pump going out or heat up due to lack of gas in the tank. It's a worthwhile comment, but it ain't the solution. My car stalls regardless of the amount of gas in the tank.

I had the same problem, 93 245 would shutoff when it was hot out. New CPS, MAF good. Ended up being the solder joints in the fuel pump relay, they were cracked. Re-flowed to solder and all is good now.
