2017 XC-70 Cluster Warning Light Freakout

Post by DSinDC »

My 2016 XC70 (71k miles) cluster warning lights regularly go berserk, especially when just starting to drive. I categorize these into minor freakouts and major freakouts. Minor typically starts with an ABS system warning or on call service needed warning, combined with the media shutting down entirely. If I wait a several minutes, then push the power for the media system, it reboots, showing the Volvo log onscreen and coming back to life. Many times this will resolve while driving. Major freakouts can either come on by themselves or follow a minor freakout. That looks like scary warnings about brake system failure, air bag warnings, power steering failure warning or some combination, along with fuel level indicators and speedometer all going flat at zero. Turn signals will not work. Stopping the car and restarting doesn't necessarily remediate, but sometimes the system will fix itself during a drive and then function normally. In a few other instances, I haven't been able to lock the car, except for logging into the app and locking it through the Volvo app. A couple times, the power liftgate malfunctions.

I've had this in to a dealer, who worked with Volvo to remediate. They concluded that surges were taking place and recommended replacing the ECS, which I did. Worked great for a couple of months, then happened once, and has been happening more frequently now. I have paid for many hours of diagnosis, and there are not water issues (sunroof or other A pillar leaks) and no other obvious electrical failure points. They had replaced a couple of connectors and an abraded wire.

If anyone has had or dealt with something similar and resolved it, I'd be grateful for any leads. LOVE this car, which performs beautifully otherwise, so I'm keen to fix it.

An 8 month old post.
Has there been any resolution? I ask because a beautiful 2015 I'm looking at has a distant history of "check the dashboard" service visits.
I say distant because the problem appears to have been solved.

When I read your post, all I could think of was to make sure your battery was up to snuff.

By any chance was your dealer the one in Bethesda? This is where I bought my 2007.
