96 850 - Turn signal repeaters on front fender question

Post by scot850 »

The owner of the 850 I work on from time-to-time, asked if we can retro-fit the side repeaters like I have on my 2000 V70R. He said he had a look and can see a section of wiring with a connector behind the front fender 'Volvo' badge. Is that just a cover plate that is easily removed and we can swap in a pair of side repeat turn signals? I have attached a picture of my brother's 97 850 which also does not have the side repeaters, but it also has those black 'Volvo' badges on the front fenders:

I added repeaters to my 97 R. Did not have the wiring loom for them and had to fish wires from the opening to the front signals and splice into the wires there. The badge is easily removable. This should help - https://blog.fcpeuro.com/how-to-wire-an ... arkers-p80

Neil -
Yes, the NA badge was just to fill the recess where the light is supposed to be.
I have a set, still in the box, Hella.

Hi Neil,

This is a fairly easy job, I just did this on my new 98' S70. The lights were only $12 from FCP, I chose the amber ones.

I used a hair dryer and an old credit card to carefully remove the badges. Then you just need to take some time and carefully remove the adhesive residue with GooGone, that stuff is pretty crusty after 25 plus years. After that I polished the area to make it nice and shiny.

One thing I noticed is that the wiring harness has gotten very expensive everywhere I looked. I was lucky to have 2 pigtails in my stash and I used them to make my own harness for $0.

So next time you are at a junk yard look for 99 and up P80 and grab them...

Thanks for that guys! The owner has one light and I have a bunch we can use that have been cleaned and have new bulbs. Now I know the badge is glued on and not clipped then that is a good piece to know. Cleaning old glue off is a thing I have done many times on parts.

The owner says he can see a wiring harness tucked in behind the RH badge. I can't think of aby reason for there to be as there is nothing else in behind there. On the LHS you have the wiring for the vent for the Evap system so maybe it is hiding the wiring. I will probably do a run to the junkyard again in the near future. There were 2x 00 models there so maybe worth harvesting the harnesses anyway.

Now if the owner had only mentioned this before I re-fitted his mud flaps after the rocker panel surgery............!

Hi Neil,

The wiring is easily done thru the front turn signal openings. Take them out and use 1.2 meter strong wire to reach the openings in the fenders, it's an almost straight shot. I usually bend a little eye at the end so there are no sharp corners on the cut wire. Have someone help you fish it out when it reaches the opening, and attach the wires. Then pull them to the front and connect to the turn signal wires.
I have done this multiple times and it's easy.

Also, I have never seen an 850 that was prewired, but I guess they are out there. You are supposed to see the wire and connector when you look thru the door opening into the fender.

That is where we see it on the LHS. Nothing on the RHS?

I guess we will find out eventually. Appreciate all the advice guys!

How is someone driving alongside going to know you are in a Volvo , if you remove the side badges?

If they are smart, clever and well informed, then they will know you are driving a Volvo. Do you care if the uninformed know you are driving a Volvo??
