Radiator piece broke off into hose? 98’ S70

Radiator piece broke off into hose? 98’ S70

Hey guys. My coolant light came on earlier and when I went to add more, I heard it splashing onto the road via the hose that connects to the radiator which had come loose. I thought it would be as simple as replacing and/or tightening the hose, but upon further inspection saw that the pipe or piece or whatever it is that the hose clamps onto had broken off into the hose. Is a whole new radiator the only fix for this? Thank you!

You can JB weld the neck back on but yo will probably have to run the system at low pressure with the cap loose. Ok if you are on the highway or town roads but won’t work in city hot traffic.

Get a Nissens or Valeo replacement from FCP

Search for the multiple threads on MVS for how to remove/replace the radiator. Most people remove from the bottom, but I did it from the top.

If it is just the plastic nipple at the top of the radiator, can't you buy a hose barb and either drill and tap in if threaded, and JB Weld it in? Here are a few options:





I like the 1st one but the nipple on the Volvo radiator is quite small. The pressure in the cooling system is not huge as if I recall the cap is rate t around 15 psi.

Check the head gasket. When you get the system repressurized, angle the coolant bottle such that the overfill tube is submerged and run the car to temp. You should not see any bubbles coming through the pipe. If they do come out then you may have a minor leak.

One of the reasons the nipples break is loose engine mounts allowing the hose to torque the plastic hose snout. Also, the radiator can come loose from its too ear mounts, same result. It’s probably just old age though.

Yeah, a new radiator is going to be the fix, unfortunately,

Usually not a difficult job, as long as the bolt holding the radiator to the body aren't terribly rusted.
