We recently purchased a Navigation Map Update DVD for the navigation system in our 2007 Volvo XC90. The maps that were included in the navigation system were loaded at the factory, so no DVD came with the system.
When we put in the DVD for the map update, the system started to read it and then a "cannot read disk" message was displayed on the screen. When we took the disk out, and restarted the car, a different error message displayed on the screen that stated that a DVD disk with maps was required (this had never been a requirement before putting in the map update DVD). The system is now "stuck" on this screen.
We re-inserted the disk several times. We also turned the car on and off several times. None of this solved the problem. We're left with a navigation system that no longer operates.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Go over to Swedespeed and see this thread- https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/oem- ... te.317993/, have a look and if you don't see this scenario then ask the guy (Dave) who posted the thread about your issue. I recall experiencing something similar on my '08 (same generation) the first time I tried to upgrade, was a disc issue and I had to reburn.
Couple variations on the theme, pre 07 navigation reads directly from disc so upgrade is as simple as a new disc. 07 plus navigation unit has disc plus HDD. There's no disc installed initially, if you want to upgrade you need to load the upgrade disc onto the HDD plus keep the disc in the reader. Takes a ton of time to do the disc to HDD upgrade, it will run in the background once it starts (when vehicle is on) but if you're watching it live, you'll be watching for quite a while.
My initial suggestions above. I may have a spare disc if you're stuck but try this route first and see if it's something simple.

Thank you for responding to my post and for the information you've provided. We have the
"plus navigation unit". So you had a similar issue with the DVD disc that we're having, and you burned (copied) the data from the damaged disk to a new disk?
In the forum link you provided, is Dave called R-Pow3R3d?

Hello. I did read the thread on Swedespeed that you shared. Based on the responses I received there, it appears that using third-party DVD map disks do usually damage the Volvo navigation system. This is what appears to have happened to our system. I'm sharing this information so other people may avoid making the same mistake.
