2007 S60 - What's Leaking?

Post by Mitragorz »

I had the covers off the top of the engine yesterday to change plugs and coils, to cure a misfire in #3 and #5 cylinders. #3 had A LOT of oil in it. I used a syringe to suck most of it out and used air to blow out the rest before I pulled the plug.

Anyway, there was a lot of oil in the nooks and crannies around the coils. I had replaced the VVT solenoid gaskets earlier in the year... What would be causing oil to pool up on top of the engine?

Have you checked to see if the PCV system is functioning properly (rubber glove test)? It could be pushing condensed oil vapor out of that vapor recovery hose between coils 2 and 3.

I haven’t heard about that test. The car is relatively new to me. What’s the test, and what’s the fix if it fails? New valve?

If you have not changed the seal on the oil filler cap then do that ASAP.

Glove test - Latex or rubber glove over the oil filler hole. Probably use an elastic band to keep it in place. Get someone to start the car and see if the glove inflated at idle. If it does then the PCV system is blocked or mostly blocked and needs serviced. If the glove only raises slightly at idle, but inflates way more when revs are raised then the PCV needs serviced soon. If the glove does not move and gets sucked inward when rev'd all is good with the PCV system.

Also check the PCV pipe from the top of the oil separator tank below the intake and runs up and to the left of the oil filler cap is not split or has come loose where it should be attached at the head. Aftermarket and even Volvo pipes eventually go hard and can came loose at that joint and leak. Some cars were fitted with a corrugated pipe to the head and they fall apart.
