2006 S60R Transmission Drain and Fill

Post by Ethan5150 »

Hi folks, I recently purchased an S60R with 82K miles on it. The tranny has never been flushed but the fluid looks to be in decent condition (see here: https://donofriocreative.com/s60r-fluid.mp4) I've read a bunch of the threads about flushing and drain-n-filling and I'm thinking I want to go the drain-n-fill method. Someone mentioned doing it at the same time I change my oil 3 sequential times is a pretty good way to go.

So my questions are as follows:

1) Can I just use Mobile ATF 3309 (https://amzn.to/3PpHtfs)?

2) Approx. how many quarts will drain out each time?

3) Is this really as complicated as people are making it sound? My mechanic says he's done plenty of drain-n-fills and you basically just make darn sure the volume that comes out is the volume that goes in. Am I missing something here?

Thanks folks, I appreciate your input! 🤙

Yes, i think 3.6L (sorry dont know freedom units too well), just do amount out to in.

Fluid is a bit brown, remember this stuff is red going in.

It is a good preventative measure especially on the R.

Yes on the 3309.

Looks like you're aware of this already but: your car has the TF-80SC transmission which for checking fluid level has the two-stage drain plug as opposed to a dipstick (there isn't a dipstick). Making sure you put back in exactly the same amount will definitely hold the status quo, but I do like to check the level the complicated way in a new-to-me car to make sure it has the right amount to begin with.

Thanks everyone - and what about the Mobile ATF 3309 - is that the correct fluid?

Yep, that’s a good fluid choice.

After trying several ATFs I am stuck with Volvo Original ATF. It comes in 4 liters. Mobil 3309 will suit it needs but it is thinner than the original. I started getting smoother shifts after doing 2 drains of Volvo ATF. I got 6 quarts of Mobil 3309 that I haven't touched in 3 years.
